New closet flange over old?

Hello all
This is my first foray into plumbing, so any help would be appreciated.

It looks like the previous owner cut off the ring of the old closet flange, cut off the barrel of the new closest flange, and use some leftover wax to create a seal. Leaking ensued and here I am with a 1'x1' hole in the floor.

I bought a new 4x3 closet flange but I'm not sure if it will sit right inside the old old closet flange. Is it possible to cut the old flange out of the elbow and install new? Is there some other way?

Thanks for the help!

What kind of pipe---Iron or plastic? Can't tell from the picture.

I'd say its ABS- you can see the hubs.
If I was repairing this, I'd replace it all back to the stack. that 90 looks too hacked up to save.

Exactly--you had a failure with someone elses 'fix up patch job'--best to replace with new.

I cut off the old old flange at the elbow and scored the junction of the remaining flange with a knife. Then I used a flathead screwdriver to peel the remaining flange off the elbow (not as easy as some may say). The knife scoring helped guide the peeling. I sanded, cleaned, and glued the new closet flange into place.

I bought a Caroma toilet with the offset outlet. It's nice because the outlet is attached to the flange separate from the toilet, so you can check for a good fit.

If I were to do this again I would cut off everything as mentioned by TheEPlumbers, and then use it to beat the previous owner :)
