Was there a gasket under the lip inside the sink where the pop up slides in?
There needed to be a gasket or plumbers puddy.

If there was then try applying some teflon pipe dope to the threads where that nut is under that big rubber washer.

I hate plastic tailpieces
Get a small can of this. IMO works better then tape or putty

Apply it to all mating surfaces and threads.

I hate those plastic pieces of s$%^ as well.

More than likely it's not the tailpiece but it's coming down the threads between the gasket and the popup assembly.

What we do :

1 : Lower the nut all the way down

2 : lower the gasket all the way down

3 : run a heavy bead of DAP 50 year caulking around the threads just above the gasket

4 : Re tighten the nut, and the gasket will push the DAP into the threads all the way up.
