Since you haven't posted a pic, or provided a specific model, then the 2 most common ways to remove the aerator is to either use an adjustable crescent wrench (if it has the groves/slots) or a rag and adjustable pliers should do the job. It might just be finger tight as well, so try that first.

The aerator wouldn't prevent water leaking out although have no clue about Totally square faucets something you see on a bathroom in a sailboat.
