Need fitting to pressurize gas pipe

Since Hurricane Ike, I had a plumber come out to test the integrity of my gas system. He pressurized it and it leaked down pretty quick according to him. He didn't determine where the leaks are but left that to me to save some money. I need to know what kind of fitting to use to pressurize the system to go bubble checking. I have access to an air compressor and can get to a 3/4" or 1" cap on my supply. Thanks, Chuck

Disconnect your gasline from the meter if not already done. You can put a reducer coupling onto your gasline at that point. A plumbing supply house will set you up with exactly what you need if you tell them the size of your gasline where it connects to the meter. So for instance, if your house line was 1-1/4" you'd get an 1-1/4" X 1/2" reducer and a short nipple. The supply house will have a gas test fitting that has a gauge on it. Just connect that to the nipple and you're set. Just be sure all valves at the appliances are turned off and the gasline is disconnected otherwise you might ruin your appliance(s). Around here we pump the house line up to 30psi and make sure that holds for at least 30min (inspectors here require 15min) before we call it good.

Use a spray bottle with soapy water. I use Dawn dish soap. When the gasline is aired up, liberally spray the fittings with the soapy water. Leaks will show up as bubbles that increase in size. Helps to have a flashlight as well.
