Need advice on shower handle stem

The tip of the plastic stem broke off the other handle (picture is of opposite side), is there a way to take the metal housing off to get the stem off with out calling a plumber and breaking the tile?

If it is fairly easy I would like to fix it myself.

Thanks for any feedback.

It should be a fairly easy fix, if you can figure out how to get it removed so you can replace it with a new one.

I'm not sure, but it may just unscrew right at the end where the plastic piece broke off or the whole stainless steel piece unscrews from the base. Idk. Have to experiment a little, kind of hard to tell by the picture.

Shut off water. Use 2 channel lock pliers with rag to protect ss, one to hold long ss piece and one for end piece. If you are able to get it free, take it with you to a hardware store and have them match it up.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. Please wait for the plumbers to respond with more advice and suggestions. Thanks.

Water needs to be shut off to the whole house first.
Open the valve to lower the water pressure.
That chrome tube unscrews, then the cartridge can be removed.
