Mysterious leak

I have been having excessive water bills, so I got a man from the water company to come and check the meter. He said it was ok but there was a leak in the house. I can't find any leak or damp patch.
I go away for a week at a time and have taken to turning the main stopcock off when I leave. On returning home after being away for a week with all the water off, the cold water tank was empty. I have been listening for a drip and found the sound of one in the wall behind the toilet. It stops when I flush the toilet and starts again an hour or so later!

take off the tank lid and put some cake dye in their and see if the color goes down into the bowel . If so the flapper is leaking ??? best way to tell . I bet it is. their can't be that much water going back in the wall with out seeing some wet some where.

I think the poster meant food coloring. I use red it shows up better but any color will work.

Mysterious leak

If it's not the flapper, check the bowl primer (the tube that goes from the fill valve into the overflow pipe inside the tank)

If that is sticking too far into the overflow, it will siphon the water out.
