My kitchen sink smells like sewer

Our house is about 8 years old with a double kitchen sink and we have a smell like sewer coming up the right hand sink.

There is an R.O. system hooked up and also a dishwasher. They both come in to the plumbing before the right sink.

We noticed that there was no p-trap, so we removed the majority of the pipes and installed a trap one hoping that this would resolve the problem, but unfortunately it has not.

We hooked the p-trap under the right hand sink and after the trap it goes down a 90 degree pipe under the cabinet toward the floor. My husband went on the roof to check and see if there was a block in the vent, we read to pour water down this vent to move any possible blockages, I listened under the sink and heard the water running, and still the stench continues.

One important thing that I noticed is when I poured a kettle of boiling water down the right drain, it seemed to make a tap tap tap taping noise- I'm not sure if this is a gurgling noise that others would refer to. Does anyone have any other suggestions for us to try?

I tend to keep the plug in the sink, and refuse to let my dishes that I hand wash to air dry in the sink for the fear of making everyone sick from some kind of bacteria that is coming up the drain. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Got a picture of what you have done under that sink.
Is there water in that trap?
Without water in it there's nothing to stop the gas from coming out.

Both sides of the sink should drain into the trap. Did you install a p trap or an s trap. P traps are preferred.
The ticking noise might be pipes expanding due to to hot water

Your sink should be plumbed similar to one of these pics.

My kitchen sink smells like sewer

Hi, thanks for the quick response! My picture looks like the ones posted except in reverse, being that the pipes run towards the right. The only other difference is that the pipe goes straight down through the bottom of the kitchen cupboard rather than going sideways through it.

We already unscrewed the bottom of the p-trap and it was full of water. Great suggestion about the hot water, I never thought about that, so I just poured a basin of cold water and it still makes the same noise. This time I stood and watched and it looks like the water is bobbling up like an air bubble in the middle of the drain (little round circle in the middle of the drain - the center hole that the kitchn plug goes into). I tried to attach a photo but I don't know how...........sorry.

That pipe going down through the floor of the cabinet----that is an unvented S-trap you gave created---

We may need a picture or your actual plumbing

How ever===the easy cure is to as an AAV--(Air Admittance Valve) to the riser pipe---above the place where the P-trap connects----that will allow air into the pipe to give you a good drainage---

You must have a vent issue----please try to figure out how to post a picture----

I had something like this once and it turned out to be simple. It was buildup under the rubber flapper on the disposal drain. I pulled that out and cleaned it and the drain area where it mounts really well and problem solved. Might be worth a look.
