to much water pressure?

I installed a new shower in an older home and when I fill the bath tub from the faucet the water also comes out of the shower head. The faucet is brand new and has no restrictions. Is there something I can do to keep the water coming out of the shower head.

What type of valve is it?
Most tub and shower valves have a shower diverter, a lever, a knob ect. that will control the flow either to the tub or shower.
If the tub has seperate shut-off valves choke them down, if not buy a shower head with a positive type shut off valve.
If the water pressure into the house is over 80 psi, install a pressure reducing valve after the meter.
