Mold in PVC shower drain

I've had a recurring problem with mold build-up and associated smell in my master bath shower drain. It's not hard to fix, I just pull the cover, spray it down with bleach solution and clean with a toilet brush. This is something I haven't seen before, especially on PVC. Is there something more I can do, or do I just need resign myself to the fact that it needs to be cleaned every couple of months?

Mold in PVC shower drain

There is a lot of moldy stuff in DC, but this is not usually a problem with PVC. Since it does clean up, but keeps coming back, short of replacing the offending components, continue with what works.
