Moen single handle cart. removal?

I have a nearly new Moen L82383 tub shower faucet that is plugged up from rust and crap out of a banging of old galvanized pipe in a separate repair.

I have the face plate off and the horseshoe clip out(has NO bonnet nut) but cartridge wont pull out and I am afraid of cracking my ceramic tile if I pry against it. Everything else is plastic. Why does it pull off so hard?? Whats it take??

Moen single handle cart. removal?

Moen has a tool to gently pull out a stuck cartridge.

They are about $15.00 where ever you buy the replacement cartridge.

Not using one can cause damage to the housing--or snap off the cartridge in the hole.

Good luck--MIKE--

Moen single handle cart. removal?

I pulled hard enough for it to come out,,,wow, seemed like excessive force.

Can rust and sediment be cleaned out of these strange looking cartridges or is replacement the only option?

You have nothing to lose by trying! The rubber pieces just lift off.
You may want to take a few pictures before you start--My memory isn't what it was.

Gently sand the interior of the hole and flush it out with a bit of water. Lube the hole with silicon or lithium grease if you have any.Vasoline might be o.k. for a Christmas fix.--MIKE--

You could try to clean it out, but your best bet is to buy a replacement catridge. I replaced two in my house recently, easy and inexpensive. It's amazing how smooth the faucet feels after putting in a new cartridge.

Moen single handle cart. removal?

Mike:

Thanks for the post - FYI I have a 3 year old house and this happened with 2 of my Moen Showers.

Both times I cleared the problem by disassembling the shower - yanking on the cartirge (and some minor banging side to side) - I didn't get the cartridge out (and no I didn't buy the tool) - but the movement was enough that when I reassembled the shower whatever was stuck in the cartridge was cleared and the shower worked good as new.
