Moen Shower Faucet

My daughter called and said their shower faucet is leaking. I had her and me a few pics and the name brand - Moen. Before I head over and try to replace, I seem to remember that Moen's have a cartridge and require a special socket to remove the old one.

I just though I might get some feedback to save me a little time if someone knows if I can use a regular socket and what size.

I usually just yank em out with a pair of pliers. Be careful or you will snap the stem off of it and then you're in trouble.

There's a moen cartridge puller out there, but I wouldn't say it resembles anything like a socket. . . .

The new cartridge should come with a littlle plastic adaptor that slides over the stem of old cartridge after removing the clip.
The square end of this adaptor sticks out so you can turn it with a cresent wrench.
after locking the adaptor in there try spinning it both directions a couple of times first to loosen it up before yanking on it.
Lube the new cartridge up really good with plumbers grease before installing it to protect the o-rings.
If you find the hot/cold are reversed after installing it just remove the clip and spin the cartridge 180 degrees and reinstall the clip.
They also make a tool for pulling the cartridge just incase youre not feeling lucky

I've so far only snapped 2 stems, but I had enough of the cartridge dislodged from the housing that I was able to grab onto it to get it the rest of the way out.

I'm always lucky.

I keep a pipe tap and some 1/4" copper handy just for such emergencies!
