media for a macclean backwash filter

I have recently bought a home that has a Macclean NMB1001 backwash filter system. I was taking it a part today to clean it and notice that there was only 3 inches of gravel at the bottom of the tank. I looked through the service manual to see if this was right but all signs indicate that there should be some kind of media with this filter. The previous home owner left bags of play sand but no word what it was for and why it was left. Can this sand be used as the media. Thanks for any advice.

Kind of sounds like a Neutralizer filter or to correct the ph of the water.
Over time the calcite and or mag oxide mix will be eaten away by the acidic water.
Play sand? or fine calcite?

Either form of calcite will work, fine or a more course form.
Depending on the size of the media tank as to how much calcite will be needed.
10x47 tank =1.0 cubic foot or 100 lbs
10x54 tank =1.5 cubic feet or 150 lbs
I would hold that play sand as you call it until you get some calcite to put next to.. just in case it is the fine calcite ...
