Manual pipe threading problem

I need to cut new threads on a piece of 1/2" black iron pipe.
I have a die kit [Craftsman] that has a 1/2" die.
I matched it up with a new 1/2" B.I. nipple \.
The die is too small for the O.D. of the nipple.
What size die do I need??

I just did some measuring and found that 1/2" black iron is 1/2" I.D. [I should have known that].
The O.D. is 5/8". Is that the die I will need?

Your Craftsman set is designed to cut or repair threads on nuts and bolts - a "running thread". You need a 1/2" pipe die which cuts a tapered thread since the goal with black pipe and fittings is for the joint to get tighter as it is screwed together. (A 1/2" pipe die is only nominally 1/2" - it fits the outside diameter of the pipe.)

Thank you very much for your prompt and knowledgable reply.
What hardware will I need in addition to the 1/2" pipe thread die?
