Since my contractor took off, and I have nowhere to turn, I'm hoping someone can help me. I have 2 fireplaces in my house, and I cannot use a key to turn on/off the gas.

I unscrewed the round piece in the picture to show you what it looks like. I'm holding a key right up to it, to show you the scale of how it looks, but there is no square thing for the key to turn. The middle part does look threaded, so is there something I can put on there to give it a square to turn? Or, is this the wrong key?

Thank you!

Do you mean the round chrome piece? I unscrewed that for the picture so you'd get a better picture of what I'm looking at. The chrome piece just screws on, but there's nothing inside the cylinder.

Is it common to have a hex there? Would turning that hex turn my gas on to the fireplace?
