Leaking water connection

Hi there,

Earlier on this forum I asked how to connect two water connectors for a faucet and learned a close nipple would be best. At the hardware store I could only track down black steel. I installed and though it works fairly well, I was getting a very slight leak from all connections. So I threaded all with plumbing tape, which helped more but still slight leak, so then also applied some Rectorseal epoxy putty. Again, I am getting the slightest of leaks. Any idea how to resolve this? I screwed the connections with all the elbow grease I had and the help of two wrenches. I'm out of ideas. Is black steel a bad choice?

Thanks

I can't take a decent pic right now since they're wrapped in tape to stop the leaking. But basically they're 2 steel threaded water connectors with 1/2" FIP screwed to each side of a black steel nipple
