leaking shower riser union - clawfoot

hi all,
i've installed a new strom plumbing faucet and shower enclosure on my clawfoot tub.
everything is perfect except a leak at the double female union connector that the two riser pipes thread into.

the pipes have a little rubber washer at the bottom of the threads. i first thought this meant no teflon and had a major gushing leak.
this time i took it apart and applied teflon AND pipe dope.
the leak is now tiny, about a bead every 30 seconds, but still annoying.
i can't figure out a way to tighten the pipes into the union more than hand tight. i've seen a "pipe strap" but don't own one. i've tried vice grips padded with pieces of leather. i have a strong grip but can't budge it past hand tight. they seem to lock themselves in.

any suggestions on how to deal with this would be appreciated.
