Lagoon or septic

I am from and have lived in northern IL. We are looking at property in the South Central area of the US for a second home. In the real-estate listings I have been seeing Lagoon as the sewer method. I am unsure of the Pro's and Con's of such a system. Is this something I would prefer to stay away from? I am fairly familiar with septic systems, does a lagoon use any kind of drain field or similar such as a septic?

Here is a link to Residential Sewage Lagoon Systems: A Homeowner’s Guide to Installation and Maintenance

To reduce public health risks and protect drinking water supplies, some state legislation that took effect January 1, 1996, sets minimum construction and permitting standards for onsite sewage systems. Individual counties may adopt stricter standards than those outlined by the state legislation. To ensure compliance with local codes and to reduce their environmental liability, homeowners should consult with their county health department sanitarian or building regulations department prior to construction or repair of any onsite sewage system.

This has been very informative. I have found some other resources since posting. But this gives me another understanding of some of the problems that can occur and how the systems can vary with or without holding tanks and so on. I still am not sure of everything I can look for myself when looking at a property. But getting closer. Thanks
