kitchen sink drain

Have an older home with a cast iron stack and I believe a lead pipe coming out (probably 1 1/2"), running along the wall and out under the kitchen sink to connect to the trap. We are moving the sink and need to extend that line running along the wall. Can we just cut off the curved end of the pipe and connect pvc to it with a fernco type connector to extend the drain line to the new location? Any code problems with this?

Not to code. Eliminate all of the lead. You'll need to re-plumb it all the way back to the stack. A kitchen drain should also be 2".

and if you cast your own bullets...

The lead is code, but the only approved way I know of to add to it is a wiped joint. Not too many plumbers work lead anymore, so chances of finding someone to do it is slim. Do as LC said, cut it to the cast iron stub, and run a new line to your new sink. Make sure it's 2" pipe, and properly vented as well
