Kitchen sink basket strainer

HI,
I have an older American Standard kitchen sink. I am trying to remove the basket strainer, but it is not coming out, because it has no backing nut. I now have all the parts off that will come off, except the basket is still in place. Does this unit come off from the sink? If so, how? I am using an oil filter wrench on the bottom part, so I have a very good grip, but it just spins in the hole.
Thanks,
Heather

We got it! No nut. This thing was pressed together, it was a non-removable basket strainer. What a crazy design. We had to chew through the outer housing/bell with a pair of dykes, and then the two sections finally let go so we could remove the outer section form below, and the inner section through the top of the sink. Heather

yes, they can be a pain. in the future take a hacksaw and cut just the nut holding it all on. then you can pry the nut off and all will follow. thanks, buddy builder
