Joining galvanized pipe to PVC

I would like to re-route an underground waterline to a bathroom in an out building in the backyard. The existing waterline is galvanized pipe and leaks. I would like to use PVC for the re-route. My question is how to connect the galvanized to the PVC. Some have suggested using a compression joint, others say PEX.

The key words in your post is "it's leaking" remove all of it and go with Pex or PVC.

I think me and joe are looking at this from another angle...if his galvanized pipe is leaking now..why connect on to it only to start leaking again....should have been replaced long ago....but thanks for keeping us on track..e plumber..yes they make male and female adapters.... they will work in his case....
