Irrigation Pump Leak

Hello Everyone,

I moved into a house in FL which has an irrigation pump in the garage. The pump is leaking at the threads where the PVC enters and exits the pump (two leaks). I have seen this on other pumps as well. It is as if the male threads bottom out on the female threads before being truly tight. I will have to cut the PVC to remove the old fittings and then replace with identical fittings.

Why do the threads bottom out?
Should I simply add a lot more teflon tape to the male thread?
Would iron pipe be a better fit?
