Intermittent leak

My shower.

it has a single valve-lift up to turn on, twist left or right to regulate water temp.

It will be fine most of the time, but at random times, it will start dripping. Most randomly in the wee hours of the morning.

Sometimes it just: drip............drip.................drip......... ......drip.........

other times it's drip..drip..drip..drip..

And there are times when it's just shy of being a steady stream.

When this happens, it only seems to last an hour or so.

Any ideas?

Could be just excess water between the valve and shower head held b/c of the surface tension of water.
