Depending on what surround you will be using, you might not need anything behind the surround. Some of them have flanges that get nailed directly to the studs.

Thanks a bunch, I really appreciate the advice. And I have finally gotten the tub removed with everyone's help on here I thought I would post a pic of what it looks like now for kicks. I did find mold, and so I created a separate thread for questions on that, but other than that it was okay. However, it is a bit more labor intensive than I anticipated, but I am very happy to be doing it
