Installing shower membrane worth re-doing bathroom?

Hi All - I've read some similar posts on shower pans/membranes but they seem to revolve more around bathrooms in progress of being remodeled.

I have a tiled bathroom shower floor that is already complete and I have suspicions that no shower pan/membrane (or other waterproofer was put in place). I recently had a leak where the shower floor meets the vertical rise through cracks in the grout, which I've had a plumber re-chalk and seems to be holding up. However, the plumber said that when the bathroom was put in (8 months ago) there was probably no rubber membrane b/c otherwise the water should divert to the drain, and not to my ceiling below.

I know ripping up the tiled floor and re-doing it is going to be pretty expensive but I wonder if it's a sacrifice I should make or if the chalking is good, let it be for now? The water damage this last time around could have been worse, this time it only damaged the ceiling and some wood floor planks on the 1st floor.

Thank you for your input.

-David

Thousands of bathroom floors are done with no membrane.
It sounds like where they went wrong was they used grout not caulking.
Any time tile changes direction or meets a differant surface there's suppost to be caulking not grout.

sorry, I missed that before.

If I had a 7-8 month old shower that leaked to the ceiling below...
I'd be jumping down the throat of whoever did the work until it was fixed;
and on their dime.

HTH's edit is right - the plumber I had is different from the original person that put in the bathroom. I actually don't know who that was b/c that was before I took delivery of my house.

Joe - thanks for the tip on chalk vs grout. I do believe the plumber that did this latest round of chalk said that intersection wasn't chalked.

Assuming chalk is done correctly, safe to assume that the chalk should last for a while before any threat of another leak?

Thanks!
