Installing new toilet - flange question

Bathroom remodel. The cast iron sewer pipe extends 1" above new subfloor. I will be putting down 1/2" backerboard and new tile will be 1/4" which leaves 1/4" inch of the cast iron extending above the finished tile floor.

Does the cast iron pipe have to be level with the finished tile floor to properly install the flange? If not, how do I make up the 1/4" difference between the future finished tile floor and the height of the sewer pipe?

Level to 1/4" above floor level is fine.

If the cast iron "pipe" is 1/4" above floor level, how will the flange be installed without raising the flange level higher than 1/4" above floor level? Just curious.

I was wrong about the cast iron extending through the floor.

The drain pipe that come through the floor looks to be a lead 'boot' (that's what the plumbing guy at Lowes called it) about 8" in length that fits into a cast iron elbow. I assume it's lead because of the color and the fact that the metal is real soft.

I think I'll just remove the lead fitting and replace with PVC.

Is the easiest way to remove the lead boot to cut with a sawzall in several places and pull it out in pieces?

On the lead boot, or stub as I call it, about 1 1/2" above where it ties into the cast iron 90, there should be a noticable swell or ridge running around the lead stub. This is a brass ring or ferrule which is covered by the lead. I cut the lead right above that ferrule and tie onto it with the appropriate size fernco. If it is 4 inch, I stub a piece of 4 inch pipe through the floor about 8 inches above the subfloor. Tile and finish the floor, then cut the pipe even with the finish floor and get a commode flange that will glue inside 4 inch pipe. You cannot tie onto the lead unless it has that brass ring-the lead will crush. Good Luck. If this does not sound or look right, maybe your setup is different from what I have typically seen.

P.S. After you cut the lead, run a file around the inside of the pipe and get rid of all the burrs and tampon catchers.
