Installing an expansion tank

Two questions regarding expansion tank installations:

1. All of the expansion tank installations that I've seen on the web have the "T" fitting in the cold water line directly above the heater with no heat trap in the line. Although the cold inlet pipe is routed to the bottom portion of the tank, the pipe is still exposed to the the hot water in the upper portion of the tank. Therefore the cold water in that pipe will get hot.

Should there actually be a "S" type heat trap in the cold water line between the expansion tank and the heater? Seems that a "S" heat trap would protect the expansion tank from hot water and prolong the life of its internal bladder. What do you think?

2. One web site states that an expansion tank should always be installed above the "T" fitting and not hung below it. Can you think of any reason why that would be a preferred installation?

Thanks,
HRG

Ayuh,... The same exact tanks are used in hydronic heating, 'n are exposed to temps of 180+....
No problem with the lower temps at a Dwh...
