indoor sump pump

The downstairs toilet runs to a sump pump..We have lived here for 3 years and just last week was the first time we smelled anything. Is there something I need to add to the toilet or is this the beginning of trouble?

I hope you are referring to a sewage ejector system and not a sump pump for ground water and basement flooding prevention.

The system should be closed and sealed with a cover that is not sitting loose.

Can you tell precisely where the smell is coming from?

Can you tell when the pump is coming on and is that happening at the normal time intervals?

I would be tempted to wait until something else abnormal happens, such as the toilet leaking or backing up.

Thanks. Yes it is a sewage ejector , it is closed and tight. The pump is kicking on like before. It smells at the cover. The washer is also connected to the system.

The gasket around the edge of the cover may have cracked or biodegraded resulting in a less than perfect seal. You may or may not feel that the odor is bad enough to investigate. It will not necessarily leak but if you detect moisture that is not condensation by pressing toilet paper, a single sheet at a time, along the edge, that may reveal where odors are coming out.
