Increasing height of washing machine standpipe

The water that fills up the washing machine often drains out before the washing machine can get to the other parts of the washing cycle. I've tried manipulating the drain hose (trying to see if changing the angles at which the drain hose leaves the washing machine would do the trick), but that doesn't solve to the problem. Then I checked the manufacturer's recommended standpipe height: 39". My standpipe height is 28". How can I raise the height of the standpipe?
