If the main water valve is cut off should the water heater be cut off too?
I have a problem in one of my bathrooms where water is streaming from the bathtub faucet. I have a plumber coming the next day. Meanwhile, so I don't continue to waste water I've turned it off. My concern now is whether or not the water heater needs to be shut off as well.
It is a good idea to turn the water heater heat off (turn gas heater control to Pilot) whenever the water supply is shut off. Have a hot faucet running water before turning the heat back on.
This prevents damage to the heater if for some reason the tank should empty out. Electric water heater elements can be damaged if the tank is only partly emptied.
The good conscientious technician or serviceperson will carry extra oils and lubricants in case the new pump did not come with oil or the oil was accidentally spilled, so the service call can be completed without an extra visit.
