Question

identifying in and out radiator pipes

i was wondering if there is a good (e.g. dry) way of finding out which of the two nipples sticking out of the floor is IN and which is OUT (for the purpose of locating the valve vs. union elbow). needless to say, i do not have the piping diagram of my house...

Bang on a pipe with the valve in the next room and place your ear on either nipple. See which is loudest. (That sounds naughty! )
