What kind of system can I replace the sump-pumps with?

If you are on city water check out a high quality water backup pump.
How about a generator that runs on natural gas?

I ran across this when searching for a way to make a longer lasting source of backup power for my servers, and if it works good, this could possibly be a great solution for a sump pump:

You can hookup a couple batteries to it and plug it in then plug the sump into it. Not sure how long you get on a single battery though.

A propane or natural gas generator might be a good idea too if the pump is often needed and not just there in case of emergency.

I agree, get a backup gas generator for the house.

Get a backup sump pump!

A backup generator is fine except when the problem is a burned out sump pump or a stuck float switch! Then you can have all the generating power of Niagara Falls and you still get flooded. Get a backup sump pump like a water powered Basepump or a battery powered Hydropump from www.basepump.com and gain the peace of mind it gives you.
