Question

I can't turn off the hot water coming from my kitchen sink!

Was just about to start dinner, after filling up a pot of water, I turned the faucet and the water wont shut off! I turned the shut off valve under the sink for the hot water so it is temporarily stopped, but I have to finish dinner and need to fix this. Any clues why this happened and what I can do to fix this? I'm somewhat handy, but not sure about plumbing. Any help is much appreciated.

Is the handle stuck or does it move from on to off position freely?

What kind of faucet is it?

Sounds like something inside that seats when you turn the valve off came loose, or broke off . . . .

Without being there to look at the faucet, i'd have a hard time telling you how to take it apart. Do you know what the model number of the faucet is?

Usually you take off the handle first and it will reveal something else below that unscrews. Be sure you turn off the cold valve under the sink too if you try to tackle this yourself.

YOu might get it to temporarily shut off by twisting it at the same time as pushing it back and forth or to the side. Normally a cam inside limits the twist but that may wear out and the handle gets more sloppy and floppy as well as not shutting off the water consistently.

Allan J and Alan, thanks so much for your replies. Turns out the cartridge inside of the handle just needed to be replaced. Didn't even need to take the whole sink apart. A friend showed me how to replace this.
