HW heater, rent vs buy

Right now I'm renting my HW heater as that's how it was when the house was bought so I just inherited the contract.

To me, I rather just own it. It's one bill less to worry about, and one less monthly letter in the mail. The HW heater is fairly new, the only thing I don't like is there is no blower, just a chimney, so if I were to install any type of device that exhausts air outside I could get backdraft problems, but I'm sure it's easy to add a blower.

I'm thinking of just buying it out. Think this is a good idea?

It's several years old, I'm actually not sure of the type, I'd have to check. The charge is like 40/quarterly or something like that but it seems to vary. I'd have to find out how much it is to buy out but I can't see it being more then what it's worth, so maybe 100-200 bucks or so sounds right?

Oh and yeah it's gas.
