Humming noise when water runs

Our pipes hum when we run the water. Mostly when the water is running full blast. It stops when we stop running the water. What could be causing the problem?

I vote either a fill valve on a toilet or a leaking hose bibb/atmospheric vacuum breaker.

Turn the water on, and go to those sources and see if you can identify one of them as the noisemaker.

Pipe rubbing aginst a joist, loose washer in a faucet, water pressure set to high, dirty aerator in the faucet, just a few suggestions.

when we moved to ohio 2 years we kept hearing a noise everytime the water would run. turned out it was the water meter inthe basement. a call to the water company and they came out and installed a quiet meter. check the main valve and make sure its open all the way. could be a globe valve with a loose washer.

see if you have a pressure regulator at the water meter... they can make a humming noise...
