How to Space Water Heater Flue Vent from Outside Wall?

Does anyone know how far a flue vent for a gas hot water heater needs to be from an adjoining outside wall? We have just completed a two-story addition off the back of our house. Where the outside wall of the 2nd story meets the roof of the old house happens to be where the hot water heater vents. So the vent is now about 18 inches from the outside wall of the addition. We don't want to move the hot water heater, but we also don't want to build a chase up the outside wall just for the flue. If anyone can suggest a remedy -- and knows how far we need to place the vent from the wall -- it would be greatly appreciated. My plumber thinks it needs to be 8 feet from the wall or run up to the top of the 2nd story in a chase. But I can't find anything spelled out in the IRC.

Codes vary from place to place, and you really need to ask your local Building Inspection Department. You don't want to do anything that violates local codes or endangers your family in any way.
