How to shut off main hot water line?

Hi,

I am trying to replace a shut off valve which connects my hot water to the faucet in the bathroom sink.

The hot water which comes out from the pipe off the wall is still running, and I can't shut it off. I can't change the shutoff valve until this water stop running.

Does anyone have any idea what may cause this?

Thanks so much.

Alex

Sounds like a bad valve. You'll have to shut off the main water supply.

How to shut off main hot water line?

I did shut off the main water to the house. However, water is still draining out of the hot water line from the wall pipe under the sink.

You may have a bad main shut off valve. Very common.

Often there are two main shut offs- one before the meter-one after the meter.
If your meter is relatively new there may be a valve built into the meter,(Turns with a wrench )

You may be able to stop the dribble long enough to change the sink shut off --try these:

See if there is a shut off to the water heater. If it works you've got it.

Open every faucet and hose bib in the house.Might be enough.

Hook up a hose to the water heater and open the drain cock,

Good luck MIKE

After turning off the main water shutoff, you should be able to stop the dribble if you have a faucet below the level of the sink shutoff. For example the sink in question is on the first floor and you have a laundry sink in the basement whose hot water faucet you leave open.

How to shut off main hot water line?

I understand you have shut off the main water line coming into the house and you still have hot water coming from the pipe coming from the wall. Is there a shut off valve on the COLD water line going into the water heater? Usually there is, and this should be shut also to prevent cold water from pushing out the hot water IF the main cut-off valve is leaking. And IF this water pipe is lower then other plumbing in the house you will get the residual water within the plumbing of the house out of this line. You did not state what type of piping this is, copper, threaded, etc. If this water is does not seem to be under much pressure, you might be able to use an old plumbers trick: using white bread, no crust, ball up the bread and stuff enough into the pipe to block the water long enough to do the repair job. Normally, after completing the job, and removing the aerator on the sink, the bread will wash out with the full water pressure/flow in just a minute or two. Good Luck, David

Turn the HWT off. Flip the breaker if electric and you do as some suggested, you will drain the tank and burn some elements.
Be safe, Gary

Even the drain valve on the water heater will work if it's lower than the valve being replaced. Just open it enough to dribble a little faster than your main valve leaks.

And take GBars advice and turn off the water heater.
