How to remove old valve stem?

I'm helping my brother fix a leaky tub faucet in his 1933 colonial style home. I've handled a bunch of small plumbing projects before, but never dealt with this style valve before. If it's original I may need to use much more caution or call in a plumber. My brother tried taking it off with a pipe wrench but it did not budge. Would a socket wrench be better for this situation? Also, how do you troubleshoot an old valve like this? The handle says Crane, and so does the pipe behind the wall (we have an access panel behind)

Thanks in advance - Rick

That nut should come off the end. As old as that valve is it may break.. Be prepared to replace it

Thanks for your input.

Can you recommend the best tool/technique to get the nut off without disturbing the surrounding tile?

Best regards,

Rick

I would use a small pipe wrench. I did tell you to be prepared.. Meaning, to install a new unit. It's possible it will break ( it's old)
