How to remove bathtub stopper

I searched and didn't find anything helpful. I have a bathtub stopper that you push down to close it to hold water and you push down on it again to open and drain the water.

I can unscrew the stopper's metal cap from the stopper's plastic doohickey in the drain, but how in blue blazes do you remove the plastic doohickey in the drain? It's stuck and I didn't see any screws or anything.

How to remove bathtub stopper

You need to unscrew it with a drain wrench (see pic). Why are you taking it out though? You can purchase the pop-up seperately.
