How often do you replace your plumbing snake
I have a 3/8" snake that I have been using with a drain cleaning machine for awhile. I was wondering if I should replace it. It looks in pretty good shape, but should one replace a snake after so many uses or so much time?

I only replace after a break or a serious kink

Have one machine that is 10 yrs old never replace cable

For the most part you should hear the snake turning in the pipe at all times.

An occasional short pause in the sound followed by a soft "sproing" is okay.

If you consistently get a pause in the sound and as you crank you feel it winding up and then you hear a loud "SPROING" then you are running the risk of kinking and ruining the snake. When snags of this kind start to develop it is time to start withdrawing the snake (continue cranking the same way, clockwise, if needed to get it out). Check what you caught and try again.

Once the snake gets severely kinked you will have trouble in the future avoiding a snag where it winds up under tension instead of make its way down the pipe.

I always inspect the cable (and wipe it down) when returning it to the spool. I look for cracks and bad kinks. The reason is that I do not want a section of the snake to become part of a clog by breaking.
