how much air chamber for water hammer


is there a way to calculate or a rule of thumb for how big of an air chamber u need to prevent water hammer?

is that minimum 12"? Does more = better in this situation? (of course within reason). I've seen some that were about 18~24".

This reference has it depending on pipe material strength
