How many wraps of tape?

ON 1/2"iron pipe when putting a valve on. I wrapped 5 wraps, tightenEd like crazy and have a tiny drip. I'm considering it's too much tape. Anyway, what do you suggest? Thanks

When ever possible I'd suggest getting rid of any old steel piping. At some point it's going to leak or close up on the inside.
Did you wire brush off the fitting before installing the valve.
If you use teflon pipe dope instead of tape you may have less leaks.
Two wraps should have done it.

I never use tape by itself. I always use a good paste and a couple tape wraps.
Don't over tighten 1/2 valves- very easy to do.

Pipe dope on male threads, 3 wraps of teflon tape clockwise over the pipe dope, more pipe dope on top of teflon tape. Pipe dope on female threads "very" sparingly.

Pipe dope on male threads gets squeezed "out" of the joint so amount is not critical. Pipe dope on female threads get squeezed "into" the joint so should be applied sparingly.

A lot of work but always worked 100% with no leaks for me. Overkill? Probably but prefer to do it with no leaks the first time than have to redo to correct leaks.
