How many wraps of tape?

ON 1/2"iron pipe when putting a valve on. I wrapped 5 wraps, tightenEd like crazy and have a tiny drip. I'm considering it's too much tape. Anyway, what do you suggest? Thanks

Is this new pipe or old pipe? I'm going to assume old......not very common to use iron for water in this day and age....

Just so you know....the teflon tape is not really there to seal the threads..but rather lub them up so that you can get more turns...and take it apart when you want. If you want to seal...pipe dope.

Most good pipe fitters use both...teflon to lub the threads....pipe dope to seal.

Actually ddawg it's the other way around. Tape to seal & dope for lubrication.

It's just to lubricate it, the threads are supposed to seal it.

11/2 turns 2 MAX.

I think if you read the tape package instructions or contact the manufacturer, there will be quite specific instructions. I remember reading one and it told how many wraps to use, and specified doing the wraps in a "rotating, spiral manner". No joke.

In 35 years never used it and till this day will not use it, a good quality pipe dope will be sufficient, unless you have excessive thread ware on the fitting or pipe, then guess what time for a re-pipe. or partial.

If people really stopped and thought about how pipe threads are cut, there'd be less tape sold.

That is contrary to what our pipe fitters say....and we do a lot of plumbing....

Like eplumber says...if people knew how pipe threads were cut...they would use less tape....

The tape is there to reduce the friction so you can get more turns on the pipe...THAT is what really seals the connection...

I have tightened both tape covered threads and pipe dope threads...the taped threads are much easier...
