How to get faucet handles to fit back onto valve stems

I removed some faucet handles for refinishing and now they won't go readily back onto the valve stems, apparently due to corrosive buildup on the stem and/or inside the handle. Any suggestions for how to deal with this?

What do you mean by refinishing?
If they were replated then the hole is now smaller.
