How to fit a closet bend in a 2x8 ceiling cavity

I'd like to finish our basement ceiling, but the copper closet bend for the 1st floor toilet extends below the 2x8 joists. I'll be replacing the copper with PVC. Can you folks conceive of a combination of fittings that would enable me to conceal the toilet plumbing in the ceiling without resorting to a soffit?

I'm pretty sure you will not have a problem fitting a 3" closet bend in there. A closet bend is a little tighter radius than a "regular" DWV elbow. It is very possible your copper fitting is not a closet bend.

Do I need much of a vertical piece between the bend and the flange piece?

You can set the flange right on, or in the hub of the closet bend depending on the flange you get. You do not need a vertical piece.

Thanks, Rege! I was worried I might impede the flow of . . . uh . . . waste if I didn't have a little more of a straight run before the bend.
