How do I replace the metal U pipe under a sink with a PVC one?


You mean the p-trap right? Just do exactly as they've done with the metal but use the plastic trap, plastic nuts and those plastic beveled washers. You can leave the pipe that comes down, but you will probably need to replace the tail piece that goes back towards the wall.

You can use this coupling. Kitchen drains are 1 1/2 and bathroom drains are 1 1/4

The plastic piece (shown) should attach right to the metal coming down.
No need to use a coupler in most cases.
