How Do I Remove A Moen Shower Faucet Cartridge

I have a Moen single handle pull out to turn on water shower faucet. I took the handle off, removed the clip and then pulled on the cartridge with a pliers and it won't come out. Do I need a special tool? Or what?
This faucet is original to the house, about 22 years old. The reason I want to get it out is because it is almost impossible to pull it out to turn it on. I wanted to pull it out and put a lubricant on it. I am afraid to pull exceptionally hard on it for fear of breaking something. Please help!

Yes--you need a Moen cartridge tool---They are available at the Depot and other stores.

Do not try to yank that out with pliers--If you snap off that stem you will regret that you were born.

After the cartrige is removed---clean the inside of the valve body with a bit of sandpaper wrapped around a pencil

Wipe clean and insert the new cartridge using a bit of the lubricant that comes with the cartridge.

I always pull them with pliers.

However, i'd love to have a cartridge puller.

You are smart enough to make that work---However, I've had to bail out a couple of people that snapped off the stem---Talk about a nerve wracking job--Ever try to extract a broken cartridge without damaging the valve body?

For $12---it's cheap insurance.

I agree with you. Think we used to have one in the shop, but my boss's dad mutilated it modifying it for a wheel bearing puller for one of the hand trucks.

I should buy my own, but usually I just do the channel locks on stem, and both feet on the shower wall, pull with all your might, maneuver.

And ACTUALLY, i've had good luck on the kitchen faucets placing a 2x4 on edge right next to the body and using it as a prying surface. Not sure i'd want to do that against fiberglass however.

I've had one for 18 years or so---same one.

I can't keep a ball point pen for 3 days but that silly tool goes right back into the plumbing drawer on the truck.

Pretty sure it's a 1225 cartridge.
