How to deal with greasy black deposit inside of drain pipes?

When unclogging old drains, I'm running into thick black greasy deposits in the pipes a lot. This stuff is really hard to clean off of everything, it is sort of like glue. I'm sure many of you have dealt with it.

Is something that can clean it off efficiently? Soap is useless. Maybe paint thinner or something like that?

Also does that 'Drain Care' bacteria and enzyme stuff work on the deposits? It's an interesting product but I doubt it can work miracles. I run the snake through the pipes a couple of times but I can't really make much of an impact on that thick greasy stuff on the walls.

You get it on the walls?? thats not cool. you using an open drum? I use a closed drum and make sure not to have kinks in my cable. simple green works pretty good. sounds like those lines could use a jetter.

Yes, DrainCare enzyme-based drain cleaner will work on that black stuff.
I begin the line flushing after DrainCare eating on it all night with a kettle of boiling water followed by hot water line only running until it's all flushed away. Good Luck!
