How are cast iron drains? Do you have to plunger them often?

My home has cast iron drains. I redid my entire supply including the meter to the house. My supply works great. I have never had cast iron drains but my home has them. I haven't used the toilet yet since I am still restoring the house. How are cast iron drains? Do they last? Do you have to use a plunger more often since they aren't smooth inside like PVC? Any info would be appreciated.

In my opinion cast iron is still the best material going. It's strong, lasts a long time, and is quieter then PVC. Galvanized on the other hand sucks. If you have galvanized you will probably have slow drains on everything but your toilet which doesn't use galvanized.

I've got a 1959 house with all cast iron stacks. It works great.

I regularly inspect high-end mansion-type homes, and cast iron is what those folks are installing. Especially in floors and walls.

Just keep them clean and running good and they'll last forever.

From my experience, the life span of cast iron pipes (in Florida) is about 80 years. I have a property built in 1925, and I had to replace a section of the cast iron vent stack due a 4" x4" completely failing.
Also, a camera snake shows that the cast iron drain pipe under the house is cracking and will eventually collapse.
Other properties in my area of a similar age have the same issues.
