How breakable is granite?

Not sure where to put this so..... When my granite countertops were installed (3 cm) there were left over pieces of backsplash- about 4" by 24" long. I stepped on one and it broke (on uneven soil) and dropped another piece from chest height (again on uneven soil) and it also broke. Does this sound common? I have not had any problems with countertops but worry about dropping anything such as a skillet on them, comments?

Granite is pretty fragile. It should be well supported on your counter tops though and not as fragile as it is being dropped with no support. I wouldn't go dropping cast iron pans on it though.

Granite isn't going to take ABUSE. It will wear very well under NORMAL USE. You can't drop it, drop heavy items on it, or otherwise abuse it and expect it to stand up.

Nothing to worry about. Don't jump up and down on your counter, avoid standing on it, and hang on to your pans and you'll have your counter forever.
