HOT WATER won't Light ????

My daughter's hot water heater won't light. Well actually it WILL light, but as soon as you let go of the (red button) the pilot light goes out! Have replaced the thermo coupler. It the pilot light lights, I know gas is coming through! Any suggestions? They HW heater is only about 3 - 4 years old?

Thanks!

How long you holding the "red" button? I does take a minute or so, before you can let it go, if you are waiting long enough, I would be looking at the gas valve next. That is if the thermo couple is generating the millivolt signal needed to open the valve.

Is the bracket holding the thermocouple close enough to the pilot flame?

HOT WATER won't Light ????

some brands have issues with the gas control valve. most common is whirlpool. major recalls with this unit in general.
did the door have screws holding it shut or is it a open burner chamber.

HOT WATER won't Light ????

Had a plumber friend look at it. First he thought the thermo coupler my sil put in might have been bad. Replaced it with one of his, still no go. He said the unit is 5 years old and is discontinued. IF we could find the part it would be about 100 bucks, but then with the age (not sure of the model) we could put that part in and the tank could go next year??? So I will just go buy a new tank and throw it in.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!
